Sincerity

Picture
There was a student who asked a Zen Master how one could get enlightenment quickly? He said, "You have to want it. You have to want it so much." The student said, "How much? How can I measure how much I want enlightenment?" So the Master dragged him to the river and put his head in the water until he nearly died. He struggled and fought to get free, crying for help, "Please!" (Master and everyone laugh)

Finally, the Master pulled his head up. As soon as the Master let him up, the student said, "Master, you nearly killed me! I was desperate for air. Didn't you know that? The Master said: "I knew, I knew. That's how you should feel about enlightenment. As long as you are desperate like this, then you will get it."
